WK 1974
In het WK van 1974 in West-Duitsland werd er een ander systeem ingesteld: De twee beste landen van elke groep gingen door naar de tweede ronde, waarin die landen werden opgedeeld in twee poules. De winnaars van die poules gingen naar de finale, de nummers twee speelden nog een troostfinale.
De automatisch geplaatste landen West-Duitsland en titelverdediger Brazilië namen geen deel aan de kwalificatie, waarin Venezuela, Jamaica, Marokko, India, Sri Lanka en de Filipijnen zich terugtrokken.
Bijzonderheden:
- De kwalificatiewedstrijd Nigeria - Ghana werd na 87 minuten gestaakt bij een stand van 2-3 vanwege rellen, waardoor Ghana een 0-2 overwinning werd toegekend door de FIFA.
- Topscorer van dit WK werd de Pool Grzegorz Lato met 7 goals. Daarachter, met 5 doelpunten, Johan Neeskens namens Nederland en Andrzej Szarmach eveneens namens Polen.
